Means Without End: Movement Improvisation Workshops (14 - 16  May @ K77)

These workshops are for anyone interested in using the body, language, and performance, to explore notions of selfhood and memory. These workshops will lead participants into making discoveries about their creative and psychological processes whilst guiding them through ways of integrating this knowledge. They will draw on the methodology of Tatsumi Hijikata’s Ankoku Butoh, as well as a wide range of literary and performance resources, and extend material developed over recent months in ‘virtual workshops’ (workshops written and recorded in Berlin, posted online, and then responded to and expanded by dancers in the U.K. and the U.S.). The thematic material for the K77 workshops will relate to the identity of various peripheral entities (shadows, outlines, echoes), as metaphors for raising awareness of those shadier regions of selfhood. The workshops will be conducted in English with some live music, and no previous experience is necessary, just curiosity and enthusiasm. They will take place on Monday 14th May 11.30-15.00, Tuesday 15th May 10.00-13.30, and Wednesday 16th May 12.00-14.00 (+14.00-15.30 outdoor improvisation), at K77. The cost per workshop will be €30 and €80 for all three, though we strongly encourage participants to commit to the whole process. For more information and updates visit our blog at meanswithoutend.wordpress.com and to book please email us at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The workshops will be led by two contemporary choreographers/dancers: Hannah McClure Chalut and ShaLeigh Comerford. They will be assisted by Rosa van Hensbergen (writer), Will Gardner (musician) and Joe Snape (composer). Hannah is a contemporary choreographer and teacher, a bodyworker, and a scholar. She holds a BA in Performance, an MA in Dance Anthropology, and is completing a PHD. Hannah specialises in body-mind centering techniques, experiential anatomy, holistic movement practices, choreography, and performance. She was an original member of Shen Wei Dance Arts and later founded and then directed her own company, Open Air Dance, for eight years. ShaLeigh holds a BA in Studio Art and Creative writing and an MA in Visual and Performing Arts. She began her training with the Roanoke Ballet Theatre and has since danced with the Dendy Dancetheatre, Keigwin & Company, and Martha Clarke, among others. Most recently, ShaLeigh has returned from a 3-month training period with the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, Israel. In 2005, she founded ShaLeigh Dance Works, a dance theatre company dedicated to creating socially conscious works.
