The film begins in the year 2055 in a world ravaged by catastrophic climate change; London is flooded, Sydney is burning, Las Vegas has been swallowed up by desert, the Amazon rainforest has burnt up, snow has vanished from the Alps and nuclear war has lain waste to India. An unnamed archivist (Pete Postlethwaite) is entrusted with the safekeeping of humanity's surviving store of art and knowledge. Alone in his vast repository off the coast of the largely ice-free Arctic, he reviews archive footage from back "when we could have saved ourselves", trying to discern where it all went wrong. Amid news reports of the gathering effects of climate change and global civilisation teetering towards destruction, he alights on six stories of individuals whose lives in the early years of the 21st century seem to illustrate aspects of the impending catastrophe. These six stories take the form of interweaving documentary segments that report on the lives of real people in the present, and switch the film's narrative form from fiction to fact

Franny Armstrong (*1974 in London) is a British environmental activist and free-lance documentary film maker. Following her zoology studies at the University College of London, she began to produce independent sociocritical documentations on climate change. Her best-known film so far has been McLibel (1997, 2005), a low-budget production on two poor activists that were sued by the McDonalds group and have to answer to the courts in the longest civil-law court proceedings in the UK. In 2002, she directed Drowned Out on the fight against the Narmada dam in India. The director attracted international attention with The Age of Stupid (2009). Franny Armstrong lives in London

Mit Blick auf diese ernüchternden Ausgang diskutieren wir, ob der Titel des englischen Dokudramas  "Zeitalter der Dummheit" auf die politischen Entscheidungen von heute zutreffen.

Wir  fragen Vertreter aus Politik und Wissenschaft, was lokale, nationale und internationale Politik vor dem Hintergrund der neuesten Ergebnisse der Klimafolgenforschung für den Klimaschutz leisten und bewegen kann. Mit dem Publikum diskutieren wir ferner Inwieweit jede/r Einzelne privat und politisch gefordert ist, sich in Sachen Klimaschutz zu engagieren und eine klimaschutzorientierte Politik einzufordern.

In "The Age of Stupid" blickt „Archivar“ Pete Postlethwaite im Jahr 2055 auf unsere Zeit zurück und fragt sich, wie wir uns in Sachen Klimaschutz so „dämlich“ verhalten konnten. An sechs realen Personen werden die schon heute sichtbaren Folgen unseres öl-zentrierten Wirtschaftsmodells deutlich: der indische Unternehmer Jeh Wadia will mit einer Billigfluglinie Millionen von Indern vom Zug in das Flugzeug locken. Die junge Nigerianerin Layefa versucht, ihr Medizinstudium mit Fischfang im ölverseuchten Niger-Delta zu finanzieren. Frankreichs ältester Bergführer Fernand kämpft für den Erhalt der Alpengletscher, vom Ex-Shell-Mitarbeiter Alvin, der Hurrikan „Katrina“ erlebte, stammt der Filmtitel. Die irakischen Kriegshalbweisen Adnan und Jamila schlagen sich in Jordanien durch, während Windenergie-Planer Piers in England mit heftigem Widerstand von „Landschaftsschützern“ konfrontiert wird.
